Help with Aeros TV
Answers to the questions people ask most, and how to reach us if yours isn’t here.
A channel won’t open
Aeros TV opens most channels in their own apps, so when one won’t open, it’s usually the app. These are the things to check, in order.
- Make sure the channel’s app is installed on your Apple TV and that you’re signed in to it. Opening the app on its own is the quickest way to check.
- In Aeros TV, go to Settings, then Channels, and tick the apps you use. The guide only lists the channels your ticked apps can open.
- Some apps don’t let other apps start a channel, so Aeros TV opens the app and you choose the channel there. Channel 4’s app also asks whether to watch from the start or live.
- U’s channels, such as U&Dave and U&Drama, can’t be opened at a channel by any app on Apple TV, so Aeros TV can’t open them.
If it still won’t open, email us and tell us which channel.
Setting up an HDHomeRun
An HDHomeRun is a small tuner that shares the channels from your aerial over your home network, so any Apple TV in the house can watch them in Aeros TV, with pause and rewind.
Every HDHomeRun made for a UK aerial (DVB-T/T2) should work, and to pause and rewind it needs two tuners. If yours gives you any trouble, get in touch and we’ll look into it.
- 01 Plug your aerial into the HDHomeRun.
- 02 Plug the HDHomeRun into your router.
- 03 Open Aeros TV and say you have one, or go to Settings, then HDHomeRun. It finds it for you.
Some Freeview channels are now streamed over the internet rather than broadcast, so they carry no picture on the aerial and an HDHomeRun has nothing to play. Aeros TV only shows the ones that play, and opens the others in their apps where it can. There’s more on this below.
HDHomeRun tuners are made by SiliconDust. We don’t sell them or support the hardware itself.
Questions and answers
The same answers as the Help in the app, under Settings.
Watching
How do I watch a channel?
Select a programme that’s on now, in the TV Guide or on Home. It opens in the channel’s own app or, if your HDHomeRun receives the channel, plays right in Aeros TV.
Why does an app open without starting the channel?
Some apps don’t let other apps start a channel, so Aeros TV opens the app and you choose the channel there. Channel 4’s app also asks whether to watch from the start or live.
Why isn’t a channel in the guide?
The guide lists the channels your apps can open. Search for the channel: if it’s in an app you haven’t added, Search shows it and offers to add the app.
You can also tick apps in Settings, under Channels, and when you install one, Aeros TV offers to add its channels. BBC One and BBC Two follow your TV region.
How does Aeros TV know which apps I have?
It asks Apple TV whether the apps it can open, such as BBC iPlayer and Sky Go, are installed. Apple TV only answers for apps Aeros TV names in advance, so it can’t see anything else you have, and the answer stays on your Apple TV.
It says an app isn’t installed
Install it from the App Store on your Apple TV, sign in, and try again. BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and My5 are free.
Do I need an HDHomeRun?
No. Without one, every channel opens in its own app. With one, the channels from your TV aerial play right in Aeros TV, with pause and rewind. Set one up in Settings, under HDHomeRun.
HDHomeRun
Why aren’t some Freeview channels showing?
Freeview has been moving some channels, such as Pop and Ketchup, from the aerial to streaming over the internet. Your aerial still lists them, but only a Freeview Play TV can show them, so your HDHomeRun has nothing to play.
We keep a list of which Freeview channels play from an aerial, and Aeros TV checks any others itself, so the guide only shows channels that play. Where one of your apps has the channel, it opens there instead. A few that do play aren’t in the guide yet. Settings, under HDHomeRun, shows which.
How do pause and rewind work?
Press Play/Pause to pause, and Left or Right to skip 10 seconds back or forward. You can go back up to 30 minutes. Pausing uses a second tuner, so your HDHomeRun needs two.
Which channels play on my HDHomeRun?
Choose in Settings, under HDHomeRun: its channels and the apps’, its channels only, or the apps’ only.
Where are the channel numbers?
The guide lists channels in the usual UK order, with the apps’ channels among your HDHomeRun’s. To list them by your HDHomeRun’s numbers, with the numbers shown, choose Channel number in Settings, under General.
Favourites and Watchlist
How do I add a channel to my Favourites?
Press and hold Select on any of its programmes, then select the heart beside the channel’s logo.
How do I save a programme to watch later?
Select a programme that hasn’t started, then Add to Watchlist. Its new episodes on that channel are added too, unless you turn that off. For one that’s on now, hold Select and choose Add new episodes.
What happens to a programme once it’s been on?
It stays on your Watchlist, under Already shown, until you take it off: select it, then In Watchlist, or Remove all shown to take off every episode of that show. In Settings, under General, you can have programmes taken off after 30 days, or as soon as they’ve been on.
Can I watch something that’s already been on?
If it’s on catch-up in BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 or My5, yes: select it in the TV Guide, or under Already shown in your Watchlist, then Watch in BBC iPlayer (or its app). Aeros TV knows the last week’s programmes. News and live shows often aren’t kept.
Will I be reminded when it starts?
While Aeros TV is open, a card offers the programme as it starts. Apple TV doesn’t let apps show reminders while you’re in another app.
Region
Can I use Aeros TV outside the UK?
The broadcasters’ apps only play their channels in the UK, so outside it most channels won’t play.
How do I change my TV region?
In Settings, under Channels: TV region decides which BBC One and BBC Two you see.
